Features:
Stupa done with reinforced brickwork and RCC intermediate slabs.
Design Brief:
Building ‘Jangchub’ Stupa designed by the 15th Karmapa on exact proportions given.
Design Intervention:
The stupas we looked up on the net were moulded in Reinforced cement concrete, and we were averse to use concrete for the entire shell. We worked with the engineer to make the shell with brickwork with 8cm thick RCC slabs dividing the different chambers. The 2 m spire on the top tapered with a built in cylindrical hollow, to insert the ‘tree of life’ for consecration.
Our take away:
As architects we connect to and work on the land to create spaces for different uses. But to create a built form that emanates healing energies, to connect with Buddhist spirituality and be involved in the building of divine proportions was hugely satisfying and enriching.
