Scope of Study:

This document starts with information about the ‘Galaxy Plan’ of Auroville and describes the different features. It then takes its focus to the Lines of Force in the residential zone and holds its study on the attributes of design that need to form a base for high density development with sustainability and beauty. It also tries to decode the flow and rhythm of the plan for orienting individual projects to respond to the essence of the ‘galaxy’ grid.

The Galaxy plan of Auroville is a balanced fabric of built and unbuilt spaces. With the peace zone at its centre, the entire layout is a swirl of dynamic movement from the centre to the outside, with fingers of built environment moving outward and fingers of green moving inward, all in a surprising and creatively interwoven matrix. It represents an evolutionary unfolding and with its simultaneous porosity and density, facilitates inter-connections at various scales and levels.

At PATH, architectural practice is contextual. We seek motivation from the Auroville plan as well as from the pioneering work of the early architects here. Our endeavour to gain insights about the possibilities of the Galaxy plan helped us discover the varied ways in which design can be resolved with creativity, connectivity, harmony and beauty.
