Features:
Terracota tile roof with wooden rafters and double slope, use of traditional doors, reconfiguration of old temple columns and inward looking space with deep verandah on all sides.
Design Brief:
To build a small Buddhist Temple area while using reclaimed old stone columns and sloping roofs.
Design Intervention:
We rendered spaces into two distinct ways. The outer circumambulatory verandah would be a neat area with stone columns and a flat roof, lifted by a floating plinth. The inner Temple area would rise up inside a sloping roof with neat joinery of wooden rafters bringing in the light from high above.
This created a meditative and calm space inside, layered from the outer workings.
Our take away:
A small project has large possibilities of creating and learning. The assembly of old columns which were in 3 parts each was by itself a task, with each member being of a different height. The beautiful contrast of the old and the new, the low and the high as well as the inside and the outside was beautiful to work on and manifest.
