Features:
Use of vernacular elements such as arches, friezes, terracotta tile roof with palmyra rafters, cement oxide flooring. Inclusion of local craft of jute weave in furniture.
Design Brief:
Existing building of marriage hall was to be converted into a modern office space with meeting rooms and dining facility.
Design Intervention:
The first intervention was to change the entire electrical layout to suit office work stations. The Tamil heritage features were accentuated and added, natural light and ventilation were enabled by creating openings and double height spaces. Landscape was integrated by giving courtyards.
Our take away:
Reuse and redefinition of spaces is part of conserving our cultural heritage without compromising on the standard of modern functioning. The transformation of an inward looking building into a well-lit and cheerful office was a joy to work on and manifest. The involvement of local art was an added satisfaction!
